Tides

The Severn Channel has one of the largest tidal ranges in the world. This means there is no water at low tide and the area between the beach and channel is covered by sinking mud. Water-based kite sports are only possible around high tide (2hrs either side of the maximum height during spring tides, and up to 3hrs either side during neap tides).

 

Wind Direction

Weston-super-Mare works best when the wind is travelling in a Westerly direction. The Bristol Channel can create a venturi effect on the wind resulting in higher wind speeds than other parts of the UK coastline. The direction of the tide can have an impact on the wind speed, the wind will often 'feel' stronger on an outward tide than it will on an inward tide.

 

Parking

 Kiters can setup to the Southern end of Royal Sands Beach. The parking area is marked by wooden posts. Beach Wardens at Weston-super-Mare may from time to time close this beach parking or put up markers due to high tides or dangerous conditions. Kiters are welcome on the beach if they have valid 3rd party insurance (like BKSA) and can be asked for proof by the council.

Launching and Landing

To set up, launch and land, use the area South of the parking (wooden posts) highlighted in Dark blue on the map. Kiters do not have a 'right of way' here over other beach users, please take care. The red zone is the area North of the pier, kitesurfing is not allowed here. Do not leave kite bags and pumps on the beach. It is best to leave these locked in your vehicle. 

Riding 

Due to the on-shore wind direction, Weston-super-Mare is not recommended as a spot for beginners. Riders should be able to ride upwind with confidence and know self-recovery techniques. 

The beach rangers are responsible for beach safety and have asked that kitesurfers keep a respectful distance from other beach users to avoid personal injury. During the busier Summer months (July to September) kite surfers must, where possible, keep 50 meters from the shoreline. This rule will be less enforced outside of these months however if the Beach Rangers feel you are riding too close to the shore, they will ask you to move backwards using 3 short blasts from their siren. ​
